You likely already know that cigars come in a variety of wrapper colors, but do you know what each color means? In this article, we’ll explore the different types of cigar wrapper colors and their definitions so that you can make an informed decision when selecting which cigar is perfect for your needs.

Understanding The Different Types Of Cigar Wrapper Colors

The outermost layer of a cigar is known as the wrapper and it comes in a variety of colors depending on the type of tobacco used to roll it. Generally speaking, there are five main types of wrappers: Claro (light), Natural (medium), Maduro (dark), Oscuro (very dark) and Candela (green).

Claro – Claro wrappers are usually light in color with a smooth or oily texture. They produce milder flavors with notes of creaminess and nuts due to their low oil content.

Natural – Natural wrappers are typically medium brown in color with slightly visible veins running through them. These cigars have medium body strength with notes of earthiness.

Maduro – Maduro wrappers are typically very dark brown with an extremely oily texture. They offer full-bodied flavor profiles with subtle sweet notes like cocoa or coffee among others.

Oscuro – Oscuro wrappers are usually very dark in color, almost black, and feature an ultra-rich flavor profile due to their extreme oiliness. These cigars tend to be stronger than maduros with pronounced sweet flavors such as licorice or molasses.

Candela/Double Claro – Candela/double claro wrappers are bright green in color and offer milder taste than other wrappers due to its low oil content. They often feature a slight grassy flavor along with some sweetness thanks to its fermentation process which helps enhance its overall character!
